We address the meaning of modern life through many diverse beliefs, yet we all know suffering, so we can all see a purpose in alleviating it in others. Not that we should try to be totally selfless though, for such isn't even possible. Rather, the idea is simply to treat each other thoughtfully, based on sympathy, empathy, and no desired rewards nor punishments.
